BTS Ignites Seoul's Historic Heart in Monumental Comeback

Global K-pop sensation BTS marked their highly anticipated return to the stage, performing for the first time in nearly four years at Seoul's iconic Gwanghwamun Square.

SEOUL, South Korea — K-pop powerhouse BTS made a triumphant return to the stage Saturday, holding their first group performance in nearly four years at Seoul's historic Gwanghwamun Square. This long-awaited reunion followed a period during which the seven members — Jin, Suga, J-Hope, RM, Jimin, V, and Jung Kook — fulfilled mandatory South Korean military service and pursued individual solo projects. The comeback concert in central Seoul serves as a prelude to an extensive global tour, with more than 80 dates planned across the U.S., Europe, and Asia.

Revival at a Historic Landmark

The performance unfolded at Gwanghwamun Square, a site of profound historical significance, forming the main gate of Gyeongbokgung Palace, a landmark dating back to the Joseon Dynasty. The Korean Heritage Service granted BTS special permission to perform at this revered location, making it the first major live performance ever held at the site. Organizers emphasized the unprecedented nature of the event, which was also livestreamed globally, allowing millions worldwide to witness the historic moment. The choice of venue underscored the group's deep connection to Korean heritage, setting a unique backdrop for their resurgence.

A Global Fandom's Devotion

The announcement of BTS's return drew the unwavering devotion of their global fanbase, known as the "BTS Army." Fans traveled from myriad corners of the world to attend, while many already residing in South Korea converged on the venue. Among them was Betty Filip, a 33-year-old from Minnesota, who made the life-altering decision to move to South Korea in 2023, driven by her profound admiration for BTS. Despite not securing a ticket to the concert itself, Filip arrived at the square at 5:30 a.m., determined to experience what she described as a historic moment.

"BTS introduced me to Korean culture, and I was just at a point in my life where I needed a change, so I just decided to quit my job and risk it all," Filip shared in an interview. "I’ve just learned to love Korea through them, so moving here was the only option. There was nowhere else I wanted to go." A devoted member of the BTS Army since 2020, Filip expressed how "the last few years felt so empty without them" and felt compelled to be present for their comeback. "It’s not only a monumental moment for the music industry, but also for Korea and Korean culture and history," she asserted. "This performance is truly unprecedented. To be able to witness it live is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity."

Blending Tradition and Triumph

The concert itself masterfully blended contemporary K-pop artistry with profound traditional Korean elements. The group made their entrance by walking along a historic pathway, once traversed by Joseon Dynasty kings, instantly connecting their modern performance to centuries of Korean legacy. Furthermore, parts of the show incorporated hanbok, traditional Korean clothing, further cementing the cultural tapestry of the event.

The setlist featured songs from their latest album, "Arirang," released Friday and named after a revered traditional Korean folk song, alongside global chart-toppers such as "Dynamite" and "Butter." Speaking to HYBE, the group’s management company, group leader RM detailed the thoughtful stage design. "To maximize the symbolic space of Gwanghwamun, we designed the stage with an open ‘cube’ structure that ensures an unobstructed view," RM explained. "The key point was to frame both Gwanghwamun and the stage in a single screen without either blocking the other." Despite an ankle injury, RM delivered a powerful performance, albeit with limited movement, with other members joining him during key choreography sections, showcasing the group's enduring unity and professionalism.
