Giant Moon Rocket Begins Journey Back to Launchpad

NASA is poised to roll its massive moon rocket back to the launchpad at Florida’s Kennedy Space Center on Thursday evening. This crucial maneuver sets the stage for the Artemis II mission, a much-anticipated journey that will send four astronauts around the Moon. The 322-foot-tall Space Launch System (SLS) rocket, topped with the Orion capsule, will launch the crew on a 10-day trip as early as April 1.

The intricate process of moving the 11-million-pound rocket and spacecraft from the hangar to the launchpad is a painstaking 4-mile trek. The journey is scheduled to commence at 8 p.m. ET and is anticipated to conclude approximately 12 hours later. This marks the second time the rocket has been transported to the launchpad. Its initial rollout occurred in mid-January, but engineers later identified a blockage in the flow of helium, necessitating the rocket's return to the Vehicle Assembly Building for repairs. A specialized moving platform, known as a crawler-transporter, will facilitate the vehicle's return, inching along at an approximate pace of 1 mile per hour.

Artemis II: A Historic Crewed Endeavor

The upcoming mission, designated Artemis II, represents a significant milestone: it will be the first instance of NASA’s Space Launch System rocket and Orion spacecraft carrying a human crew. This flight will mark the system's second spaceflight overall, following the uncrewed Artemis I mission, which successfully orbited the Moon in 2022.

The four-member crew for Artemis II comprises NASA astronauts Reid Wiseman, Christina Koch, and Victor Glover, alongside Canadian astronaut Jeremy Hansen. As these astronauts swing around the Moon, they are projected to reach a distance farther from Earth than any humans have ever traveled, underscoring the mission's ambitious scope.

Overcoming Technical Hurdles

During the rocket's tenure in the hangar for repairs, NASA successfully addressed the helium flow issues. Engineers resolved the problem by replacing a critical seal within a line that feeds helium from ground systems into the rocket. In addition to this primary repair, the team also undertook the replacement of batteries on both the rocket and the Orion spacecraft, followed by a series of comprehensive tests to ensure system integrity.

The helium issue was initially uncovered during an extensive fueling test and launch-day walkthrough, often referred to as a wet dress rehearsal. This particular rehearsal was the second conducted for the rocket; the first had to be cut short due to a hydrogen leak detected at the tail end of the rocket, highlighting the complexity and rigorous testing required for human spaceflight.

Final Preparations and Certification

In the week preceding the rollout, NASA officials convened for a two-day flight readiness review. Mission managers, the four-astronaut crew, and other key NASA representatives engaged in thorough discussions concerning the upcoming flight, its inherent risks, and the remaining work. Following these comprehensive deliberations, the agency made the definitive decision to proceed with a launch attempt in April, formally certifying both the rocket and the spacecraft as ready for human flight.
