Tiger Woods Faces DUI Charges After Florida Rollover Crash

Golf icon Tiger Woods was arrested and charged with driving under the influence on Friday afternoon following his involvement in a rollover vehicle accident in Jupiter Island, Florida, according to authorities.

Incident Details and Arrest on Jupiter Island

The crash occurred shortly before 2 p.m. on Friday in Jupiter Island, located within Martin County. Responding to the scene, officials from the Martin County Sheriff’s Office reported that the incident involved Woods’ vehicle, a dark Land Rover, and a truck actively pulling a trailer.

According to law enforcement accounts, Woods, 50, was operating his Land Rover when it clipped the rear of the truck’s trailer. The driver of the truck provided a statement to officials, recounting his attempt to turn into a driveway off a two-lane road. As he began the maneuver, he reportedly observed Woods’ vehicle approaching “at high speeds” in his mirror. When the truck driver endeavored to move his vehicle further off the road to avoid a collision, the Land Rover "overtook" the truck at the last moment, swerving in an apparent attempt to prevent a crash, but ultimately made contact with the back of the trailer.

Following the impact, Woods’ SUV rolled onto its driver’s side. Officials stated that the golfer then managed to climb out of the vehicle through the window. Remarkably, neither Woods nor the driver of the truck sustained any injuries in the accident.

Law enforcement officers at the scene quickly suspected Woods was impaired. He subsequently submitted to a breath test as requested but declined to provide a urine sample. Officials reported that Woods informed the officers he had taken medication for prior injuries. Authorities arrested him at the scene and transported him to a local jail. Woods was released from Martin County Jail shortly before midnight. Images captured during his departure depicted him grimacing in the passenger seat of a black SUV as the vehicle navigated through a gathering of paparazzi.

Charges Filed and Recent Appearances

In addition to the driving under the influence charge, Woods also faces a separate charge for refusing to take a test, officials confirmed. The legal proceedings following these charges are pending.

The arrest follows a busy week for the golf star. Earlier in the week, on Tuesday, Woods participated in the finals for Tomorrow’s Golf League. His team, the Jupiter Links Golf Club, competed but ultimately lost to the Los Angeles Golf Club in the match. This recent public appearance marked his competitive return to the sport prior to Friday’s incident.

A Pattern of Past Incidents and Legal Challenges

Friday's incident marks Woods' second rollover crash in recent years and his second DUI arrest in Florida. In 2021, Woods was involved in a severe rollover crash in Rolling Hills Estates, Southern California, where he sustained serious injuries. Authorities investigating that incident concluded that he was driving at least twice the posted speed limit in a 45 mph zone when his Genesis GV80 SUV struck a tree. The impact caused the vehicle to fly through the air before landing on its side.

At the time of the 2021 crash, officials stated there were no signs of impairment. However, this finding subsequently caused some public and investigative backlash. Investigators faced scrutiny for their decision not to secure a search warrant for the golfer’s blood samples, which critics argued could have detected any evidence of alcohol or drugs in his system. Woods was not charged in connection with that 2021 crash.

His legal history also includes a 2017 arrest for driving under the influence, which also occurred in Florida. Following that earlier 2017 incident, Woods voluntarily checked himself into a clinic to address issues related to prescription medication.
