U.S. Treasury Secretary Defends Aggressive Stance on Iran, Easing Oil Sanctions

Administration Justifies Escalation Amidst Conflict

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent on Sunday publicly defended the U.S. and Israeli military strikes on Iranian infrastructure, which have been ongoing since the joint war began in February. Bessent articulated the administration's strategic rationale, stating, "sometimes you have to escalate to de-escalate."

His comments closely followed a pronouncement from President Donald Trump on Truth Social, where the President issued a 48-hour ultimatum to Iranian leadership to reopen the Strait of Hormuz. Trump warned that failure to comply would result in U.S. military strikes that "will hit and obliterate their various POWER PLANTS, STARTING WITH THE BIGGEST ONE FIRST!" Bessent backed this assertive rhetoric, suggesting it represents "the only language the Iranians understand."

Early Sunday, a spokesperson for Iran's military command headquarters, Col. Ebrahim Zolfaqari, delivered a counter-warning via the IRNA Iranian state news agency. Zolfaqari stated that if Iran's fuel and energy infrastructure were attacked, Iran would retaliate by striking "fuel, energy, information technology systems and desalination infrastructure used by America and the regime in the region."

In recent weeks, the U.S. has notably avoided targeting Iran's oil infrastructure during military operations in the Middle Eastern nation. President Trump last week told NBC News that the U.S. military had "totally decimated" Iran’s Kharg Island, a critical hub, but affirmed, "I didn’t do anything having to do with the energy lines, because having to rebuild that would take years." He added, "we may hit it a few more times just for fun." The President also confirmed he was collaborating with international allies to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, a vital maritime passageway that has been closed since the war's outset, contributing to surging global oil prices and increased gas costs in the U.S.

The Strategic Importance of Kharg Island

Secretary Bessent also addressed his prior remarks concerning Kharg Island, a key center for Iranian oil production. Speaking to Fox Business earlier in the week, he confirmed, "The military assets on Kharg Island were destroyed." He further speculated on the island's future, adding, "We will see what happens with — whether that eventually becomes a U.S. asset."

While the Treasury Secretary did not elaborate on what establishing Kharg Island as a U.S. asset would entail, he informed "Meet the Press" moderator Kristen Welker that "all options are on the table," including the deployment of U.S. troops to secure the island. U.S. officials had previously indicated to NBC News last week that President Trump was weighing options to send American forces to secure the oil facilities on Kharg Island, located approximately 15 miles off mainland Iran's coast.

Controversial Sanction Adjustments and Global Oil Supply

Further defending the administration's strategy, Bessent addressed the Treasury Department's recent decision to ease certain sanctions on Iran. This move permits "the sale of Iranian oil currently stranded at sea," an action taken as the Trump administration seeks to mitigate rising energy costs.

Announcing the measure on Saturday, Bessent stated it would "quickly bring approximately 140 million barrels of oil to global markets" and help "to relieve the temporary pressures on supply caused by Iran." However, some experts questioned the prudence of economically bolstering Iran during an ongoing conflict.

Bessent clarified on Sunday that the oil allowed for sale "was always going to be sold to the Chinese" at a discount. He explained that "we had always planned for this contingency" and characterized the move as "jujitsuing the Iranians" by "using their own oil against them." When pressed on why the U.S. would allow Iran to profit from the oil, Bessent responded, "Iran already gets a huge amount of the money, because Iran is the largest sponsor of state terrorism, and China has been funding them." He asserted that the sale would ultimately benefit the United States' Asian allies, including Japan, Korea, Indonesia, and Malaysia.

Congressional Criticism Emerges

The administration's approach drew sharp criticism from Capitol Hill. Appearing on "Meet the Press" after Bessent, Senator Chris Murphy (D-Conn.) lambasted the Treasury Secretary's comments. Senator Murphy told Welker, "This administration has totally lost touch with reality. This war is spinning out of control."
