The ongoing U.S.-Iran conflict, now entering its fourth week, triggers a surge in fuel costs, sends ripples through investment portfolios, and pushes mortgage rates higher, signaling a widening economic impact across the nation.

Soaring Fuel Costs Strain Household Budgets

The initial economic repercussions of the U.S.-Iran conflict have become immediately apparent to American consumers at the gas pump. Just three weeks into the hostilities, nationwide unleaded gas prices averaged $3.93 a gallon on Saturday, according to AAA. This figure marks a significant increase from $2.98 a gallon recorded on February 26, merely two days before the U.S. and Israel initiated attacks on Iran. The 24% surge in fuel prices over this brief period stems directly from rising global oil prices.

This escalation in oil prices follows an Iranian blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, a critical shipping chokepoint off Iran’s southern coast. In peacetime, approximately one-fifth of the world’s total oil supply typically transits through this narrow strait. Joe Brusuelas, chief economist at RSM, characterized the situation as a potential “short-term affordability shock” for the U.S. economy. He noted in a client communication that such a shock “will restrain consumption and growth,” and even if it does not trigger an end to the business cycle, it "will take a toll on the economy.”

New data from the Bank of America Institute for the second week of March reveals a more than 14% year-over-year increase in gasoline spending. This rise indicates that higher prices at the pump are consuming a larger portion of household budgets, potentially limiting discretionary spending. Economists from the Stanford Institute for Economic Policy Research estimate that the average U.S. household will spend an additional $740 on gas this year due to the jump in oil prices. This increase significantly outweighs the average $360 boost individual households have received so far in federal tax refunds, despite predictions that the refund figure will rise by the end of filing season.

Investment Markets See Mounting Losses

The economic ripple effects extend beyond daily expenditures, touching the investment and retirement funds held by a significant portion of the American public. More than half of all American adults own stocks, often through retirement accounts and mutual funds, making market performance a widespread concern.

After several weeks where U.S. stock indexes largely outperformed those of other countries following the conflict's outset, losses began to accumulate on Wall Street this week. This shift reflects growing market sentiment that both the U.S. and Iran are bracing for a prolonged engagement. Friday witnessed a sharp sell-off in stocks, as war-related headlines heavily influenced market sentiment, leading major indexes to their fourth consecutive weekly decline.

The Nasdaq Composite notably fell 2% on Friday, bringing its year-to-date decline to 6.8%. The benchmark S&P 500 also tumbled, ending the day down 1.5% and 4.9% for the year. Meanwhile, the Dow slid 443 points on Friday, pushing its year-to-date loss to 5.2%. These declines represent the worst four-week period for the S&P 500 and Nasdaq Composite in some time.

Mortgage Rates Climb Amid Inflation Concerns

A third significant area where the U.S.-Iran conflict promises to exact a financial toll on Americans is the mortgage market. The average interest rate on a 30-year fixed mortgage has climbed a full half-point since the war began, rising from just under 6% the day before the U.S. attacked Iran to 6.53% by Friday.

These higher mortgage rates introduce an additional layer of financial pressure on prospective homebuyers, coinciding with the peak real estate season. Just a month prior, investors widely anticipated that the Federal Reserve would implement at least one, if not two, cuts to its fed-funds interest rate this year. Such a move typically influences overall interest rates and indirectly contributes to a reduction in the cost of homeownership.

However, growing fears of inflation, primarily fueled by higher gas prices that subsequently drive up the costs of shipping, food, and heating, are now shifting these expectations for anticipated rate cuts, further complicating the economic outlook for American households.
