However, Simmons recalled his exchange with Hegseth differently. He did not tell Hegseth to "finish" the job, and instead, they spoke mostly about Tyler, his impressive service record, and the speed with which he had advanced in the military. Simmons expressed his gratitude for the warmth shown to him by both Hegseth and President Donald Trump, with whom he also spoke separately at Dover Air Force Base in Delaware.

A Pentagon spokesman stated that Secretary Hegseth has the utmost respect for Gold Star families and has pledged to honor the sacrifice of their loved ones, while a White House spokeswoman said that Trump "grieved" with the families and expressed the nation's deep gratitude for their loved ones' service. Simmons, a 60-year-old music teacher, has questions about the war and is unable to draw definitive conclusions without all the data, saying "who wants war?" and acknowledging that sometimes it may be a necessity.

Hegseth's account of the families' message echoes comments made by Trump after another meeting with the families of six different service members whose bodies were returned to the U.S. earlier this month. However, a public official who was present during those meetings reported not hearing any of the families tell Trump to "finish the job" in Iran. The Dover meetings were part of a ceremony called a "dignified transfer," where families arrive at the air base to retrieve the remains of their loved ones and may choose to meet with senior officials who sent their loved one to serve.
