Escalation Fears Mount as Iran Rejects Trump's Ultimatum on Hormuz Strait

Tensions in the Middle East reached a critical new juncture as Iran squarely rejected a 48-hour ultimatum from President Donald Trump to reopen the Strait of Hormuz. The rejection came alongside a defiant threat from Tehran to escalate its own strikes on energy and water desalination facilities across the region, directly countering President Trump's promise to "obliterate" the nation's power plants should its demands not be met.

Mutual Threats Escalate

President Trump issued his ultimatum on Saturday evening via a post on Truth Social, demanding the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, a vital maritime trade route through which approximately 20% of the world’s oil supply passes. The President threatened to target Iran’s energy infrastructure if the demand remained unmet.

Iran swiftly dismissed the deadline on Sunday morning, demonstrating no intention of backing down. Colonel Ebrahim Zolfaqari, spokesman for Iran’s Khatam al-Anbiya military command headquarters, delivered a stark warning via the IRNA Iranian state news agency. He stated, "If Iran’s fuel and energy infrastructure is attacked, then fuel, energy, information technology systems and desalination infrastructure used by America and the regime in the region will be struck." Desalination, the process of converting seawater into potable water, plays a critical role in supplying water to Israel and numerous Gulf nations neighboring Iran.

Mohammad-Bagher Ghalibaf, speaker of the Iranian parliament, reinforced these threats on X, cautioning that any strike on Iran's power plants would lead to "critical infrastructure, energy and oil across the region will be irreversibly destroyed and oil prices will rise for a long time."

Amidst this escalating rhetoric, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent appeared on NBC News’ “Meet the Press” on Sunday, stating that the Trump administration left "all options on the table" regarding the reopening of the strait. When questioned by moderator Kristen Welker about whether the U.S. was scaling back or escalating the conflict with Iran, Bessent remarked that those two concepts were "not mutually exclusive," adding, "Sometimes you have to escalate to de-escalate."

Strait of Hormuz at Core of Conflict

The current standoff over the Strait of Hormuz stems from its effective closure by Iran since February 28. This action followed U.S. and Israeli attacks on Iran, which rapidly triggered a wider regional conflict now entering its fourth week. The blockage of this critical waterway has had significant global economic repercussions, particularly for oil markets. Oil prices have soared worldwide, with retail gas prices experiencing an increase of 93 cents per gallon, and the price of U.S. crude oil rising by over 70% since the beginning of the year. While largely closed, Iran has permitted a small number of vessels to transit through the strait.

The broader conflict intensified over the weekend. On Saturday, Iran targeted a joint U.K.-U.S. base situated in the Indian Ocean. Simultaneously, nuclear sites in both Iran and Israel came under attack. Iran’s Natanz nuclear facility sustained a strike, but the Iranian judiciary’s official news agency, Mizan, reported no leakage. The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) independently confirmed that no abnormal off-site radiation levels had been observed following either the attack on Natanz or an Iranian strike near an Israeli nuclear site in Dimona.

Regional Implications and Expert Analysis

Ross Harrison, a senior fellow at the Middle East Institute and author of “Decoding Iran’s Foreign Policy,” offered insights into the U.S. position. He suggested President Trump's ultimatum indicated the administration faced "limited options to open the strait — and I think that may be dawning on him." Harrison elaborated during a Sunday phone interview, arguing that "military means alone to open the strait probably would not have the desired effect of easing up on the oil markets and on pricing, unless they completely obliterate all potential for the Iranians to respond, which I don’t believe would be the case."

Harrison further underscored the impracticality of relying solely on military force to normalize shipping. "The ships are not going to pass, and insurance companies aren’t going to insure ships as long as it’s an active war," he explained, highlighting the complex interplay of military action, economic consequences, and international commerce in the volatile region.
