Israel Targets Top Iranian Officials Amid Deepening Regional Conflict and Global Economic Concerns

Israeli strikes have eliminated key figures within Iran's leadership, delivering significant blows to Tehran, yet experts caution that these actions may fail to alter the broader trajectory of a conflict already generating global economic instability.

Blows to Tehran's Leadership

Israel announced on Tuesday the killing of Ali Larijani, widely regarded as the operational head of Iran, alongside Basij militia chief Gen. Gholam Reza Soleimani, following overnight strikes. Iranian authorities confirmed Larijani's death, marking a significant psychological and logistical blow to the Islamic Republic. These latest targeted killings occur as Iran continues to reel from the earlier death of Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, whose successor son has yet to make a public appearance.

These strikes underscore Israel's demonstrated capability to eliminate high-level adversaries. Michael Stephens, a senior associate fellow at the Royal United Services Institute, a London-based think tank, described Larijani as "a big scalp." Stephens added, "It’s impressive what Israel is able to do. They promised they’d hit the regime, and they’re doing it very successfully."

Israel's Stated Objectives and Escalation

Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz affirmed that his military would "continue pursuing" Iran's leaders and "repeatedly cut off the head of the octopus and prevent it from regrowing." This statement accompanied the announcement of the dual killings, signaling an ongoing campaign.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has long pursued the aim of toppling the Iranian theocracy, stating his country is weakening the regime to empower its populace to oust it. However, the conflict extends beyond targeted assassinations. Israeli and U.S. forces are actively bombarding Tehran and other Iranian cities. The Iranian Red Crescent Society reported at least 1,200 Iranian fatalities by March 3, with likely more since then. Retaliatory strikes by Iran against Gulf states and Israel have also resulted in dozens of deaths.

Analysts Weigh Strategic Effectiveness

Despite the tactical successes of Israel's targeted strikes, analysts question their long-term strategic impact. Experts suggest these actions might paradoxically harden the Iranian regime rather than weaken it, contrary to the hopes of its opponents. "From a global perspective, you have to ask: So what?" Stephens remarked, highlighting the limited broader effect.

Rouzbeh Parsi, an adjunct lecturer at Sweden's Lund University, concurred, stating that the assassinations "will most likely not affect the operational side of the war." However, Michael A. Horowitz, a geopolitical and security analyst, noted that targeted killings can disrupt Iran's internal operations. Horowitz explained, "They can scramble command, slow decision-making, force successors into hiding, and demoralize both leadership and foot soldiers alike." He characterized Larijani as "an important piece of that puzzle, as someone who acted as a coordinator between different actors within the Islamic Republic," suggesting his death "could increase internal tensions in the short term."

Global Fallout and Economic Repercussions

The immediate comfort for the rest of the world remains limited as the conflict, waged alongside the United States, triggers an oil crisis and global economic shock. Iran has significantly escalated the conflict by effectively blocking the Strait of Hormuz, a crucial choke point for global oil and other key goods. With ships deterred by fears of Iranian missile and drone attacks, global prices for essential commodities have soared.

"Iran has successfully moved this conflict onto the global level," Stephens asserted. "All Iran has to do now is survive, and keep upping the cost." He concluded that Israel "can kill as many Iranian officials as it likes, but it won’t change the quagmire we’re now in." While many experts had warned of Iran's potential to close the strait if attacked, the current crisis appears to have surprised those prosecuting the war. Former President Donald Trump attempted to rally allies to send ships to reopen the strait, a request largely declined. In public statements, Trump criticized allies, stating the U.S. did not need NATO "but they should have been there."
