Pophouse Acquires Tina Turner's Legacy, Poised for Digital Reimagination

Swedish entertainment company secures rights to the "Queen of Rock 'n' Roll's" name, image, likeness, and music catalog, with plans to consolidate her enduring impact.

Pophouse Entertainment, the Swedish entertainment company co-founded by ABBA's Björn Ulvaeus, has acquired the rights to Tina Turner's name, image, and likeness, alongside a majority share of her music catalog. The acquisition, announced Thursday, transfers these significant assets from music company BMG to Pophouse, signaling a new chapter for the late music icon's celebrated legacy. The financial terms of the deal remain undisclosed.

Pophouse's Vision for Turner's Legacy

Jessica Koravos, CEO of Pophouse, offered insights into the company's motivation and preliminary vision for the acquisition, though specific project plans will be revealed within the next six months. "One of the reasons that we were so interested in Tina is because she has such an incredible visual presence and such an incredible stage energy," Koravos told The Associated Press. She emphasized Pophouse's intention to develop projects that can "portray that and try to recreate that to some degree."

Koravos articulated a broader ambition for the acquisition, stating, "What we want to do is really help to consolidate her legacy." She positioned Turner's cultural stature alongside other legendary figures, suggesting, "I think that Tina Turner is up there, or is going to be up there, with the Elvises and the Marilyn Monroes of the world." While declining to confirm whether a digital avatar is currently in development for Turner, Pophouse's track record with immersive digital experiences suggests the potential for innovative engagements with her iconic presence.

Conversations for the deal reportedly commenced after Turner's passing in 2023. BMG will retain a percentage of Turner's catalog, and while Turner's estate was not a counterparty in the transaction, it remained "informed and participating in the conversations," Koravos noted. Alistair Norbury, president of BMG U.K., Continental Europe, and APAC, affirmed the shared commitment to Turner's enduring influence. "Tina Turner’s voice and spirit shaped modern music and popular culture," Norbury stated. "Our responsibility, alongside Pophouse and the Estate, is to ensure her work continues to resonate with audiences around the world, while remaining true to the strength, independence and originality that defined her career."

A Storied Career and Enduring Impact

Tina Turner, revered globally as the "Queen of Rock 'n' Roll," passed away in 2023 at the age of 83. Her multidecade career was marked by a string of chart-topping hits, including "What's Love Got to Do With It," "The Best," and her electrifying rendition of "Proud Mary." Turner's unparalleled stage presence and powerful vocals captivated millions, solidifying her status as one of music's most dynamic performers.

Throughout her illustrious career, Turner garnered 12 Grammy Awards, including a prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award. The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inducted her twice—first in 1991 as part of Ike & Tina Turner, and again in 2021 as a solo artist. She received recognition at the Kennedy Center Honors in 2005 and sold more than 150 million records worldwide, leaving an indelible mark on music and popular culture. Her story of resilience and triumph resonated deeply with audiences globally, making her not just a music icon but a cultural phenomenon.

Pophouse's Expanding Digital Frontier

This acquisition aligns with Pophouse's recent expansion beyond its Swedish roots and its growing reputation for leveraging cutting-edge technology to preserve and reimagine artistic legacies. In 2024, the hard rock quartet Kiss sold their catalog, brand name, and intellectual property to Pophouse in a deal estimated to exceed $300 million. Prior to this, Kiss collaborated with Pophouse to develop digitized avatars, which made a notable appearance during the final night of their 2023 farewell tour.

The advanced digital avatar technology powering these ventures was developed by George Lucas’s special-effects company, Industrial Light & Magic, in partnership with Pophouse. This same collaborative team brought the "ABBA Voyage" show to life in London, where fans experience a full concert by the Swedish band's digital avatars, performing as they appeared in their heyday.

Pophouse's active engagement in the music industry also includes a 2024 partnership with pop icon Cyndi Lauper, which involved the sale of a majority share of her music. Lauper commented on Pophouse's unique approach, stating, "Most suits, when you tell them an idea, their eyes glaze over, they just want your greatest hits. But these guys are a multimedia company, they’re not looking to just buy my catalog, they want to make something new."

Koravos reiterated Pophouse's strategic focus, emphasizing that the company "is not trying to be a major (label)." She clarified, "It’s not a volume game for us. We want to acquire 10 or 12 really unique properties that have even more unique projects." Pophouse aims to engage artists and estates who harbor creative projects for their body of work, offering support in their realization. "I think what interests artists, and the estates of artists in some cases, is that there aren’t very many people who are talking to them about what they want to achieve, creatively, around their body of work," Koravos concluded, underscoring the company's commitment to imaginative and unique artistic endeavors.
