Senate Clash Over Vaccine Science: Sanders Demands Hearing on HHS Secretary's Claims

Senator Bernie Sanders has formally challenged Senate Health Committee Chairman Bill Cassidy to convene a hearing aimed at definitively debunking the scientifically rejected premise that vaccines cause autism. The demand comes as Sanders expresses deep concern over recent actions and statements by Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., which he argues have eroded public trust in vaccine efficacy and safety.

Call for Accountability on Vaccine Claims

In a letter exclusively shared with NBC News, Senator Sanders (I-Vt.), the ranking member of the powerful Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions (HELP) Committee, pressed Chairman Cassidy (R-La.), a physician by profession, to confront what he describes as Secretary Kennedy’s "longstanding crusade against vaccines and his advocacy of conspiracy theories that vaccines cause autism — all of which have been repeatedly rejected by scientists." Senator Cassidy himself has previously affirmed his belief that vaccines are "safe and effective and will not cause autism." Notably, Cassidy cast the deciding vote to confirm Kennedy's appointment as HHS Secretary.

The Secretary's Actions Under Scrutiny

Sanders' letter highlights several specific actions taken by Secretary Kennedy since assuming office. One key concern involves the federal vaccine advisory panel, where Kennedy reportedly fired all 17 existing members. He then replaced them with his own appointees, including several individuals who have publicly promoted a link between vaccines and autism.

Furthermore, Sanders alleges that Kennedy directed the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to alter a webpage. This page, which previously stated vaccines do not cause autism, was modified to suggest, without presenting evidence, that health authorities had "ignored" potential connections between the shots and autism. While the CDC webpage still retains the statement "Vaccines do not cause Autism," an asterisk was added, explicitly noting its inclusion was due to a promise made to the Health Committee chairman.

Beyond vaccine claims, Secretary Kennedy has also linked the pain reliever Tylenol to autism and collaborated with former President Donald Trump in encouraging pregnant women to avoid the medication. Following this warning, Tylenol orders for some pregnant women reportedly declined. However, a January analysis of research subsequently found no link between the drug's use during pregnancy and autism or other neurodevelopmental disorders.

Scientific Consensus Meets Political Pressure

The scientific community, including pediatricians and vaccine experts, has consistently maintained that no credible research has ever suggested a link between autism and vaccines. Against this backdrop, Senator Sanders' demand for a hearing seeks to reinforce scientific consensus. He called for a session featuring "leading scientists, physicians, and public health experts" to "review the existing body of research on autism, discuss how federal agencies evaluate scientific evidence, and clarify what is known."

Senator Cassidy has not yet responded to the request for comment on Sanders' letter. The chairman faces a challenging re-election campaign in November, including a primary contest against Trump-endorsed Representative Julia Letlow (R-La.), who receives support from the Make America Healthy Again PAC, a group run by Kennedy ally Tony Lyons.

A Hearing Remains Undated

Months prior to Sanders' recent letter, Chairman Cassidy had extended an invitation to Secretary Kennedy to testify before the Health Committee for an oversight hearing, initially scheduled for September 18. Six months later, that hearing has yet to take place. When questioned by NBC News, Cassidy has repeatedly stated that a date for the hearing is "being worked out," leaving the status of the highly anticipated testimony uncertain amidst the growing call for transparency and scientific clarity.
