Trump Issues Stark Warning to Iran Over Strait of Hormuz Closure

President Donald Trump has threatened significant retaliation against Iran, vowing to "obliterate" its power plants if the critical Strait of Hormuz is not reopened to maritime traffic within 48 hours. The ultimatum comes as tensions escalate in the Middle East, driving global oil prices higher and prompting international concern.

Ultimatum on the Strait of Hormuz

President Donald Trump issued a forceful warning to Iran on Saturday evening via a Truth Social post, stating the United States would target the nation's power infrastructure if the Strait of Hormuz remained closed. Trump's message stipulated a tight deadline for the Islamic Republic. "If Iran doesn’t FULLY OPEN, WITHOUT THREAT, the Strait of Hormuz, within 48 HOURS from this exact point in time, the United States of America will hit and obliterate their various POWER PLANTS, STARTING WITH THE BIGGEST ONE FIRST!" Trump wrote.

The Strait of Hormuz, a crucial maritime chokepoint, facilitates the passage of approximately 20% of the world's oil supply. Recent Iranian attacks on ships in the area have effectively halted maritime traffic, leading to a substantial increase in global oil prices.

Global Economic Impact and US Responses

The closure of the Strait of Hormuz and the ongoing conflict have triggered significant economic repercussions worldwide. Retail gas prices in the United States have climbed by 93 cents per gallon, and the price of U.S. crude oil has surged over 70% since the beginning of the year.

In an effort to mitigate soaring energy costs, the Trump administration announced Friday it had lifted some sanctions, allowing for the sale of Iranian-produced oil. Earlier in the month, the administration also suspended the Jones Act, which removed certain shipping regulations on oil, and temporarily lifted some sanctions on Russian oil.

Trump has consistently urged international allies to assist in securing the Strait of Hormuz. Speaking to reporters on Friday, he called for intervention from China, Japan, and NATO. "You know, we don’t use the strait, the United States. We don’t need it," Trump stated. "Europe, needs it. Korea, Japan, China, a lot of other people, so they’ll have to get involved."

Intensifying Regional Conflict

Trump's Saturday declaration coincided with the fourth week of an escalating conflict across the Middle East. On Saturday, Iran reportedly targeted a joint U.K.-U.S. base situated in the Indian Ocean. Concurrently, Iran's primary nuclear enrichment site experienced another strike.

The Iranian judiciary’s official news agency, Mizan, reported no leakage following the strike on the Natanz nuclear facility, located about 135 miles southeast of Tehran. The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), the U.N. nuclear watchdog, stated it had been informed of the strike and was investigating. The IAEA has previously indicated that the majority of Iran’s estimated 970 pounds of enriched uranium resides at its Isfahan facility, with a lesser quantity at Natanz.

Responses to the Natanz strike were varied. Israel’s military spokesperson indicated the country was "not aware" of a strike by its forces there, while the Pentagon declined to comment. Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova warned that such attacks posed a "real risk of catastrophic disaster throughout the Middle East."

Later on Saturday, Iran announced it was targeting Israel’s nuclear program. Rescue services in Dimona, home to Israel’s main nuclear research center, treated at least 27 injured individuals. Israel is widely believed to possess nuclear weapons, though its leadership neither confirms nor denies their existence. Separately, Israel's primary emergency service, Magen David Adom, reported that a missile strike in Arad, a city in southern Israel, sent at least 88 people to hospitals, with ten in "serious" condition. The perpetrator of the Arad strike was not immediately identified.

The Natanz facility has been a recurring target, having been hit in the first week of the current conflict, with satellite images showing damaged buildings. It also sustained damage during a 12-day conflict last June.

Broader Claims of Military Success

In another Truth Social post on Saturday, Trump asserted that the U.S. military had "blown Iran off of the map" and was "weeks ahead of schedule." He further claimed, "Their leadership is gone, their navy and air force are dead, they have absolutely no defense, and they want to make a deal. I don’t!"
