In response to the escalating crisis, President Donald Trump has urged other countries, particularly those affected by Iran's attempted closure of the strait, to take action and police the shipping route. Trump named China, France, Japan, South Korea, the U.K., and other nations as potential partners in securing the strait. He expressed optimism that these countries would provide support, stating that "many countries" would be sending warships to the region and that the U.S. would coordinate with them to ensure a smooth and efficient operation.

A Cautious Response from Global Allies

However, the nations listed by Trump have responded cautiously to his request for support. Tokyo, a close ally of the U.S., has not officially responded to Trump's call, with its foreign ministry stating that Japan would not immediately dispatch naval vessels at Trump's request. The French government has also been non-committal, with its foreign ministry saying that its ships would remain in a "defensive" posture in the eastern Mediterranean. China, meanwhile, has called for an immediate cessation of hostilities but has not directly responded to Trump's request. The U.K.'s Energy Secretary, Ed Miliband, emphasized that the best way to reopen the strait is to bring an end to the conflict, while South Korea's presidential office said it would carefully review the request.

A Challenging Road Ahead

The lukewarm response from these nations has poured cold water on any hopes Trump may have had for a quick resolution to the blockade. According to H.A. Hellyer, a senior associate fellow at the Royal United Services Institute in London, the countries Trump named have all gone quiet, which is "quite telling." France is "the closest thing to a yes," he said, but even French President Emmanuel Macron is talking about something "purely defensive." As the international community navigates this complex and challenging situation, it remains to be seen what action these nations could eventually take in response to the looming economic crisis.
