German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius summed up the mood among U.S. allies, stating "This is not our war, we have not started it." Leaders from Berlin to London have expressed reservations about Trump's demands, indicating they have no immediate plans to provide military support to reopen the crucial waterway.

The Strait of Hormuz was effectively closed by Iran in response to the American-Israeli assault launched last month, sending global oil prices surging and threatening an international economic shock. Trump's call for action has been met with skepticism, with many European governments reluctant to be pulled into the war with Tehran. Former Estonian President Toomas Hendrik Ilves noted that it was "a bit rich" for Trump to be asking for help from countries he had previously insulted.

Spanish Defense Minister Margarita Robles stated that "Spain will never accept any stopgap measures" to keep the strait open, emphasizing that the objective must be to end the war. In contrast, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has expressed a desire to "restore the freedom of navigation" as quickly as possible, while making it clear that he would not be drawn into "the wider war." Other nations, such as Japan and Australia, have also indicated that they have no plans to send ships to aid Trump's request.

Alternative Proposals and Ongoing Tensions

Top European diplomat Kaja Kallas has floated a proposal similar to the one in 2022 that ensured Ukraine could export grain amid Russia's invasion. The wrangle over the strait marks the latest point of tension between the Trump administration and Washington's historic friends across the Atlantic. The dispute is likely to continue, with many European leaders calling for a clear strategy and an end to the conflict, rather than simply providing military support to reopen the strait. As Ilves noted, "If countries send troops and something happens to them, is he going to make fun of them again?" The situation remains uncertain, with no clear resolution in sight.
