Washington Unlocks Iranian Oil to Combat Soaring Energy Prices Amidst Escalating Conflict

The United States has temporarily eased sanctions on Iranian oil, a strategic reversal aimed at cooling rapidly rising energy prices and mitigating the economic fallout from an ongoing military campaign.

Sanctions Eased Amidst Global Energy Crisis

The United States Treasury Department announced Friday a temporary and "narrowly tailored" easing of sanctions on Iranian oil, originally imposed following Iran's 1979 revolution. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent stated that the measure would permit the sale of approximately 140 million barrels of Iranian oil currently stranded at sea, directly injecting this supply into global markets. This action aims to relieve immediate supply pressures, which Bessent attributed to the broader conflict involving Iran.

The decision comes as global energy markets reel from the economic shockwaves of a military campaign, which commenced at the end of February. Since the conflict began, shipping through the crucial Strait of Hormuz, a conduit for roughly 20% of the world's daily oil consumption, has come to a halt. This disruption has directly contributed to a significant surge in energy costs, with U.S. crude oil prices climbing more than 70% since the start of the year and retail gas prices increasing by 93 cents per gallon. The value of the unlocked Iranian oil is estimated to exceed $14 billion for Tehran at current market rates.

Strategic Shortcomings and Unintended Consequences

Experts are scrutinizing the U.S. decision, pointing to a perceived lack of strategic foresight and warning of potential long-term implications. Danny Citrinowicz, a senior researcher on Iran at the Institute for National Security Studies, suggested the move highlights a "flawed campaign" from a strategic preparation standpoint. "The U.S. is funding a war against itself," Citrinowicz commented, arguing that the imperative to control oil prices has overshadowed the objective of "eliminating this regime in Iran."

Moritz Brake, a senior fellow at the Center for Advanced Security, Strategic and Integration Studies, echoed these concerns, indicating that the decision to ease sanctions reflects an "underestimation of how well Iran would be able to resist the assault and the repercussions on the global economy." Brake stated that "the risks have been underestimated."

Furthermore, Brake highlighted a "double effect" on Russia's ongoing conflict in Ukraine. While the military campaign in Iran has reportedly led to a decrease in drone attacks in Ukraine due to Iranian drones no longer being shipped to Russia, it also indirectly fuels Russia's war machine. This occurs as rising oil prices and separately lifted sanctions on Russian oil provide additional financial resources.

Broader Economic Ripples and Mitigating Efforts

The easing of Iranian oil sanctions forms part of a broader strategy by Washington to stabilize energy markets. Other efforts have included releasing millions of barrels from strategic oil reserves, a move coordinated with other International Energy Agency member countries. The administration has also lifted the Jones Act to ease shipping regulations and temporarily lifted sanctions on Russian oil.

Despite these measures, market sentiment remains volatile. Stocks experienced a sharp sell-off on Friday, marking the worst four-week trading period since April 2025, when trade tariffs dominated headlines. International Brent crude oil continued its ascent, trading around $111 per barrel, concluding the week up 8.3% and the year up 84%.

The ripple effects are extending across industries. Scott Kirby, CEO of United Airlines, informed employees that the company is preparing for sustained higher oil prices, potentially reaching $175 per barrel and remaining elevated until the end of 2027. Consequently, the airline plans to cancel some flights as part of its preparedness strategy. "There isn’t much downside for us to preparing for that outcome," Kirby noted.
