Last week, a devastating strike on the Al Daein Teaching Hospital in East Darfur, Sudan, resulted in the deaths of at least 64 individuals, among them a confirmed 13 children. The assault, which occurred on Friday, also left at least 89 people injured, according to a report released Saturday by the World Health Organization (WHO). The global health body further confirmed that the attack has rendered the vital Al Daein Teaching Hospital completely non-functional, stripping the region of crucial medical services.

Tedros Ghebreyesus, the head of the WHO, communicated these grim details via a post on X, underscoring the severe humanitarian impact of the ongoing violence. The loss of the hospital marks a significant blow to the already fragile healthcare infrastructure in Sudan, where millions are in dire need of medical aid amidst a protracted conflict.

Conflicting Accounts of Responsibility

The strike on Al Daein Teaching Hospital unfolds against a backdrop of escalating warfare that has gripped Sudan since April 2023. The nation descended into chaos when a fierce power struggle between the Sudanese military and the rival paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) erupted into a full-scale armed conflict across the country. Both factions have since been implicated in widespread human rights abuses and violations of international humanitarian law.

Following the hospital attack, the RSF swiftly placed blame on the Sudanese military for the deadly incident. However, the army vehemently denied any involvement in the assault. In a contradictory statement, two military officials, who requested anonymity due to not being authorized to discuss the matter publicly, indicated that the strike was intended to target a nearby police station. These conflicting accounts highlight the challenges of establishing clear attribution and accountability amidst the intense fighting that characterises the Sudanese conflict.

A Worsening Humanitarian Catastrophe

The strike on the Al Daein Teaching Hospital is the latest in a series of devastating blows to Sudan's civilian population and its healthcare system. The broader conflict has already claimed an immense human toll, with United Nations figures indicating more than 40,000 people killed since the war began. However, numerous aid groups contend that this figure is a severe undercount, suggesting the true number of casualties could be substantially higher.

Healthcare facilities, which are afforded special protection under international humanitarian law, have repeatedly been caught in the crossfire. The WHO has reported that over 2,000 people have died in attacks on medical facilities since the onset of the war, underscoring a disturbing pattern of targeting or indiscriminate strikes affecting vital civilian infrastructure.

Reacting to the escalating violence and its severe consequences for civilians and healthcare, WHO chief Tedros Ghebreyesus issued a fervent plea for an end to the hostilities. "Enough blood has been spilled. Enough suffering has been inflicted," Ghebreyesus stated. "The time has come to de-escalate the conflict in Sudan." His remarks underscore the urgent need for a cessation of hostilities to prevent further loss of life and alleviate the immense suffering endured by the Sudanese people.
