A Dangerous Lens on Beirut's Conflict

Fadel Itani, a 39-year-old freelance photographer with over 16 years of experience, is intimately familiar with the echoes of conflict in his hometown of Beirut. His work often thrusts him into perilous situations, documenting the relentless Israeli strikes that have become a grim fixture of life in the Lebanese capital. Itani's commitment to capturing these moments provides the world with a stark visual record of the city's resilience and destruction.

His latest compelling sequence of images, taken in the pre-dawn hours of a recent Wednesday, starkly illustrates an Israeli missile striking and swiftly demolishing a high-rise tower block. This act of documentation, while vital, places Itani in direct proximity to the very dangers he chronicles.

In the Firing Line

Itani learned of the impending strike from an alert issued by the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), which warned residents to evacuate the Bashoura neighborhood. The IDF stated that the Iran-backed militant group Hezbollah was operating in the area targeted for the strike. Despite the imminent threat, Itani, rather than seeking safety, purposefully moved towards the designated impact zone. "For the last two weeks, bombs have been dropping on Beirut," he remarked from his home on Wednesday, highlighting the ongoing nature of the bombardments.

Hopping onto his motorbike, Itani made the short journey from his family home. He positioned himself strategically behind a parking lot, approximately 400 yards from the site the Israeli military intended to strike. Equipped with only his camera and a wide-angle lens, and crucially, wearing a protective vest and helmet, he patiently waited. After an hour, at around 6 a.m. local time, the air was pierced by the sound of an incoming missile. With practiced speed, Itani triggered his camera, capturing a rapid series of images at an astonishing 1/3000th of a second. His lens froze the missile's descent just moments before impact, followed by the explosive aftermath. Within mere seconds, the multi-story building was reduced to a pile of rubble.

Documenting a City Under Siege

For Itani, Wednesday's events were not an isolated incident but rather another chapter in his ongoing chronicle of a city under siege. The IDF has targeted Beirut almost daily since March 2, following a salvo of rockets fired by the Hezbollah militant group that initiated a new offensive into Lebanon. Throughout this campaign, Israel and the United States have continued to strike Iran.

Itani's lens has previously captured similar devastating scenes. His photographs, including those depicting an Israeli strike on a tower block in Beirut’s southern Shiyah suburb, have been published by major news outlets worldwide. These widely distributed images often show a single missile hurtling towards a building, with onlookers raising their arms in disbelief as structures crumble to the ground, framed against a clear blue sky. His work provides an invaluable, often harrowing, visual narrative of the conflict's impact on urban environments and civilian lives.

Life Amidst the Rubble

Beyond the dramatic scenes of destruction, Itani leads a dual life. He is a husband and father to two young children, and when not documenting missile strikes, he regularly covers weddings and other community events in Beirut. This stark contrast underscores the complex reality of life in a city grappling with ongoing conflict.

The personal toll of his work is significant. "Every day, my wife and mother wonder whether I will return from work," Itani shared. Despite the constant danger, he asserts that he does not fear going out with his cameras, though he admits to reflecting on the day's events before bed each night. His perspective on Beirut remains resolute. "In Beirut, there is a feeling of fear for what the IDF will do next, but the city is full of energy and full of life, even now." He concludes with a powerful statement of enduring spirit: "Nothing stops Beirut from living."
