Havana, Cuba — Cuba’s power grid collapsed on Saturday, plunging the entire nation into darkness. This widespread outage marked the third such nationwide event in March, underscoring the communist government's persistent struggle with an aging infrastructure and the complexities of a U.S.-imposed oil blockade.

The Cuban Electric Union, an entity reporting to the Ministry of Energy and Mines, initially announced the total blackout without immediately disclosing its cause. Officials later attributed the extensive power failure to an unexpected malfunction within a generating unit at the Nuevitas thermoelectric plant, situated in Camagüey province.

Following this initial failure, a report from the Ministry of Energy and Mines described a "cascading effect" that impacted other online generating units. In response, authorities swiftly activated "micro-islands" of generating units. These localized power sources aimed to provide essential electricity to critical facilities, including hospitals, vital centers, and crucial water systems, while efforts focused on comprehensive power restoration across the island.

A Nation Grapples with Daily Disruptions

Nationwide and regional power outages have become a regrettably common occurrence across Cuba over the past two years. These frequent disruptions largely stem from breakdowns within the island's severely aging electrical infrastructure. The situation is further exacerbated by pervasive daily blackouts, which can often extend for up to 12 hours. These prolonged outages are primarily driven by critical fuel shortages, which in turn place immense strain on and destabilize the entire electrical system.

Saturday's nationwide blackout represented the second such incident within a single week and the third recorded during March alone. A previous nationwide collapse of the grid had occurred just days earlier, on Monday.

The cumulative impact of these blackouts on the Cuban population is profound and far-reaching. Residents face significant disruptions to their daily lives, including reduced work hours, a lack of electricity for cooking, and the pervasive problem of food spoilage as refrigerators become inoperable. Beyond these everyday challenges, the unreliability of the power supply has compelled some hospitals to cancel scheduled surgeries, highlighting the severe consequences for public health.

Decaying Infrastructure Meets Geopolitical Tensions

President Miguel Díaz-Canel has publicly stated that Cuba has not received oil from foreign suppliers for the past three months. The island nation's domestic production currently meets barely 40% of the fuel necessary to power its economy, leaving a substantial deficit that contributes significantly to the energy crisis.

While Cuba's electrical grid has undergone drastic deterioration in recent years due to age and lack of investment, the government also points to a U.S. energy blockade as a contributing factor to the frequent outages. This accusation follows former U.S. President Donald Trump's January warning of imposing tariffs on any country that sells or provides oil to Cuba.

During his administration, Trump had demanded that Cuba release political prisoners and transition towards political and economic liberalization as prerequisites for lifting sanctions. At times, he had also publicly entertained the possibility of a "friendly takeover of Cuba."

Furthermore, the complexities of Cuba's dwindling oil supply are compounded by shifts in regional alliances. The removal of Venezuela's former leader played a role in halting critical petroleum shipments from the South American nation, which had historically served as a steadfast energy ally to Havana. For months, Trump had consistently suggested that Cuba's government teetered on the verge of collapse, even telling reporters after a previous grid failure that he believed he would soon have "the honor of taking Cuba."
