Deadly Blaze Claims 14 Lives at South Korean Auto Parts Factory

Rescue efforts continue in Daejeon after a massive fire, believed to be sparked by an explosion, left dozens injured and several missing.

Devastating Aftermath and Intensive Rescue Operations

South Korean rescue workers on Saturday recovered the remains of 14 individuals from the charred ruins of an auto parts factory in the central city of Daejeon. The catastrophic fire, which ignited Friday afternoon, injured at least 59 others, 25 of whom sustained serious injuries, though officials did not immediately confirm any were life-threatening. Four workers remained unaccounted for as search efforts pressed on through the weekend.

More than 500 firefighters, police, and emergency personnel mobilized to contain the inferno and conduct crucial rescue operations. The extensive response included approximately 120 vehicles and specialized equipment, such as unmanned firefighting robots, water cannon vehicles, and even aircraft, deployed to tackle the blaze and navigate the damaged structure. President Lee Jae Myung urged the full mobilization of resources to support the ongoing efforts.

The factory building presented significant challenges for emergency crews. Fears of structural collapse initially prevented firefighters from entering, according to Nam Deuk-woo, fire chief of Daejeon’s Daedeok district. Searches for the missing began late Friday after officials utilized unmanned robots to cool the structure and conduct initial safety inspections. Rescuers discovered the remains of one person on the second floor, while nine others were found in what is believed to have been a gym on the third floor. Chief Nam stated that all accessible areas had been searched by Saturday morning, with the remaining four missing workers likely trapped beneath collapsed rubble. Further safety inspections are slated before crews attempt the dangerous task of debris removal to locate them.

The Fire's Progression and Hazardous Conditions

The blaze was first reported at approximately 1:18 p.m. on Friday, rapidly engulfing the facility. While the exact cause remains under investigation, witnesses reported hearing an explosion shortly before the fire spread. Videos and photographs from the scene depicted thick gray smoke billowing from the complex, with some workers seen jumping from the building in a desperate attempt to escape the flames and smoke.

Firefighters focused on preventing the conflagration from extending to an adjacent facility and, critically, isolating highly reactive explosive chemicals present at the site. Chief Nam confirmed that workers successfully recovered more than 100 kilograms (220 pounds) of these dangerous substances from the factory.

Many of the injured suffered from smoke inhalation, while others sustained broken bones and other wounds from jumping to safety. As of Saturday morning, 28 people remained hospitalized, with four undergoing surgeries for their injuries.

Identifying Victims and Unraveling the Cause

Authorities have successfully identified one of the deceased workers, while genetic testing is underway to identify the other nine victims recovered from the site. The Ministry of the Interior and Safety is coordinating with local officials as the investigation into the fire’s origin continues.

The swift and aggressive nature of the fire, coupled with witness accounts of an explosion, points towards a potentially volatile trigger. Investigators will meticulously examine the factory remains, recovered chemicals, and worker testimonies to determine what led to the devastating incident that claimed so many lives and caused widespread destruction.
