Flying in America: A Perfect Storm of Higher Costs and Longer Waits

As a rare convergence of challenges hits the US aviation industry, travelers face a spring of rising fares and dwindling convenience

The US aviation industry is bracing for a turbulent spring, as a combination of factors comes together to make flying more expensive and less convenient for millions of travelers. The Department of Homeland Security's partial shutdown has led to staffing shortages at domestic airport security checkpoints, while the Iran war has driven up jet fuel costs, forcing many global carriers to reroute or suspend flights over the Middle East.

Staffing Shortages and Security Delays

Federal airport security workers, considered "essential employees" during government shutdowns, are required to report to work despite not being paid. As a result, over 300 TSA workers have quit since the partial government shutdown began, and the number of employees calling out sick has more than doubled at several major airports. This has led to hours-long security lines at airports nationwide, with social media filled with videos of TSA screening lines that fill up entire terminals.

Rising Fuel Costs and Airfare Hikes

The Iran war and the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz have driven up the price of oil worldwide, causing a surge in the cost of jet fuel. The spot price of a gallon of jet fuel has roughly doubled to $3.99, according to the Argus U.S. Jet Fuel Index. This has significant implications for airlines, as the cost of jet fuel is the single largest expense for most major carriers, accounting for around 30% of total expenses. To keep up with rising costs, some airlines are already increasing ticket prices and adding fuel surcharges.

Airlines Respond to Rising Costs

Airlines around the world are testing their ability to absorb financial shock and respond quickly to rapidly evolving situations. Some, like Air New Zealand and Cathay Pacific Airways, have announced plans to increase ticket prices and add fuel surcharges. Others, such as Hong Kong Airlines, IAG, Qantas Airways, SAS, Thai Airways, and Vietnam Airlines, are also making changes to their pricing and surcharge structures. Unlike European and Asian air carriers, most major US airlines don't hedge their fuel costs or lock in prices using futures, leaving them more exposed to price volatility.

The perfect storm of higher costs and dwindling convenience is likely to have significant implications for the US aviation industry. As Deutsche Bank analyst Michael Linenberg warned, "absent near-term relief, airlines around the world could be forced to ground thousands of aircraft while some of the industry's financially weakest carriers could halt operations." With no end in sight for the funding lapse and the Iran war continuing to drive up fuel costs, travelers can expect a spring of rising fares and longer waits at US airports.
