Hawaii Faces New Round of Storms, Threatening Floods and Mudslides

The Hawaiian Islands are bracing for another deluge, less than a week after a record-breaking storm caused widespread damage and disruption

The rain-drenched islands are preparing for another intense storm, with forecasters warning that even moderate rainfall could pose a significant risk of flooding. More than 5 feet of rain fell in some parts of Maui from March 10 to 16, according to the University of Hawaii's climate data team, with some areas receiving as much as 33 inches in just 24 hours. The National Weather Service has issued a flood watch for much of Hawaii, citing the high soil saturation from the recent kona storm.

Understanding Kona Storms

Kona storms are a unique weather pattern in Hawaii, characterized by heavy rainfall on typically dry, leeward areas of the islands. These storms form when a low-pressure system spins off the jet stream and sets up northwest of the islands, drawing a plume of tropical moisture toward Hawaii. The resulting heavy precipitation can have devastating effects, particularly in areas that are already vulnerable to flooding and mudslides.

Compounding Disasters: Wildfires and Floods

The regions of Hawaii that are most affected by kona storms are also those that are most prone to wildfires. The areas that are typically dry and sheltered from rain are now experiencing more frequent and intense fires, due in part to the proliferation of nonnative and highly flammable grasses. When rain hits these fire-affected areas, it can trigger rapid runoff and erosion, worsening flooding and raising the risk of mudslides. Lahaina, where over 100 people died in a disastrous fire in 2023, was one of the areas hit hard by the recent floods, with residents reporting debris flowing down burn scars and into homes and streets.

A State of Weather Extremes

Hawaii is no stranger to rain, with most of the islands' precipitation generated by orographic lift, a phenomenon in which trade winds hit the islands' mountainous terrain and deliver rain to the windward side. However, kona storms throw this logic into reverse, bringing heavy precipitation to areas that are usually dry. The extreme weather events in Hawaii are part of a larger pattern of weather madness across the United States, with record-breaking heat waves in California and Arizona, and severe snowstorms in the Northeast. As the state struggles to recover from the latest storm, residents and officials are bracing for the possibility of more extreme weather events in the future.
