Oahu residents briefly faced evacuation orders on Saturday as a powerful "Kona low" storm moved across the Hawaiian islands, bringing torrential rain and severe flooding. While authorities later lifted the evacuation orders for parts of Oahu, the threat of flash floods persisted from Oahu to the Big Island through Sunday afternoon, according to the National Weather Service. Six islands—Oahu, Maui, Molokai, Lanai, Kahoolawe, and the Big Island—remained under a flash flood watch.

The "Kona low" storm, a type of low-pressure system bringing heavy rain to Hawaii from the south, exacerbated conditions on ground already saturated by similar downpours just a week prior. This led officials to issue urgent warnings, at times instructing residents in hard-hit areas to "LEAVE NOW" as floodwaters rapidly rose.

Evacuations and Infrastructure Threats

The storm's impact was particularly severe on Oahu's North Shore, a region globally recognized for its big-wave surfing. Muddy floodwaters engulfed vast stretches of the community, lifting homes and cars. Authorities issued evacuation orders for 5,500 people living north of Honolulu and expressed concern that a 120-year-old dam could fail under the immense pressure of the floodwaters. Early Saturday, the National Weather Service issued a flash flood warning, anticipating light to moderate showers to intensify.

Governor Josh Green estimated the storm's total cost could exceed $1 billion, accounting for extensive damage to critical infrastructure, including airports, schools, roads, private residences, and a hospital in Kula on Maui. "This is going to have a very serious consequence for us as a state," Green stated at a news conference, later assuring federal support following discussions with the White House. He cautioned residents that more rain was expected over the weekend in Oahu and Maui, with continued flooding concerns.

Rescues Underway Amid Challenging Conditions

As the waters rose, emergency services launched extensive rescue operations. Officials confirmed that crews rescued over 200 people from various locations. Emergency services transported approximately 10 individuals to hospitals, primarily suffering from hypothermia. The National Guard and Honolulu Fire Department executed an airlift rescue of 72 children and adults attending a spring break youth camp at a retreat on Oahu.

The rapid onset of flooding prompted dire warnings. An emergency alert on Saturday morning urged residents of Oahu's North Shore community of Waialua to evacuate immediately, cautioning that "The remaining access road out of Waialua is at high risk of failure if rainfall continues." Sirens later echoed across the area, signaling the urgent need for departure. Sienna Creasy, a Waialua resident, recounted waking to neighbors' screams hours before official alarms. She described a chaotic scene from higher ground, witnessing a neighbor's house float away and hearing calls for help, which she then disseminated across social media. Locals with construction equipment aided in rescues, transporting people in tractor buckets, while others drove aimlessly through the floodwaters. Ian Scheuring, a spokesperson for Honolulu, reported that personal drones flown by individuals seeking images of the flooding hampered official search and rescue efforts. Despite the widespread destruction and disruption, authorities reported no fatalities and no individuals unaccounted for.

Persistent Flood Risk Across Archipelago

As Saturday evening progressed, most of Hawaii remained under a flood watch. While some flash flood warnings for parts of Oahu expired, parts of the Big Island remained under such a warning through noon local time on Sunday. The weather service also issued a flash flood warning for Maui through 9 p.m. local time on Saturday, indicating imminent dangerous flooding. Radar data early Saturday night showed heavy showers and thunderstorms redeveloping over West Maui, with rain rates of one to two inches per hour, confirming that "Flooding remains ongoing." Governor Green's statements underlined the ongoing nature of the crisis, urging residents to stay vigilant as the islands continued to contend with the aftermath and potential for further rainfall.
