Nationwide Airports Face Delays Amid DHS Funding Standoff, Unpaid TSA Agents

Travelers encounter extensive security lines and frustration across major U.S. airports as Transportation Security Administration personnel work without pay, a direct consequence of a congressional impasse over Department of Homeland Security funding.

Travelers Endure Extended Waits

Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport experienced significant security line build-ups on Sunday, causing frustration for travelers navigating the domestic terminal. The extensive queues emerged days after Transportation Security Administration (TSA) agents missed their initial full paychecks, as the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) continues to operate without federal funding.

At Atlanta's airport, passengers formed parallel lines leading to security checkpoints. A digital display indicated wait times that varied from four minutes for TSA PreCheck passengers to over an hour for those in the main security line. Despite the visible exhaustion among many, most travelers maintained a calm demeanor. Hartsfield-Jackson serves as a prominent travel hub for Delta Air Lines and ranks among the busiest airports in the United States.

Laronda Monteiro, an Atlanta resident, arrived three hours early for her flight to New Orleans, a decision she credited with easing her passage through security. "I know we have to be secure, and I just appreciate those who are still with TSA, remaining on the job," Monteiro stated. "I can wait for the safety and security."

Morgan Young, en route back to Washington, expressed her dissatisfaction with the travel disruptions while waiting in line. Young, who typically utilizes CLEAR, a private security program, found the option unavailable on Sunday. "It's stressful, honestly," Young remarked. "I feel like Atlanta airport runs as smooth as possible, but it is stressful for sure. And more stressful for the people who aren't getting paid and are at work."

Ezer Gill, awaiting security clearance for his return to Fort Lauderdale, described the situation as "disappointing." He voiced concern over the hardship endured by individuals due to the government's impasse. "Air travel is an essential part of how our country operates, and if we can't get to where we need to go, it's going to affect a lot of people," Gill commented. "It's affecting me and a lot of the other people, I've heard."

Political Stalemate Impacts Essential Workers

The extended wait times at airports directly stem from the ongoing partial government shutdown impacting DHS. Funding for the department expired on February 13, leading to a situation where TSA workers, designated as essential employees, must continue their duties without compensation. These agents initially received partial paychecks following the shutdown but missed their first complete paycheck on Friday.

Democratic lawmakers have stalled Republican efforts to pass a new bill to fund DHS. Democrats have articulated serious concerns regarding the agency's handling of immigration enforcement by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and Customs and Border Protection (CBP). They insist on reforms to these entities before approving new appropriation legislation.

The financial strain on TSA personnel has reportedly led to significant attrition. According to the agency, more than 300 TSA employees have resigned from their positions since February.

Nationwide Delays and Public Reaction

Scenes mirroring those in Atlanta unfolded at airports across the country, including Fort Lauderdale, Philadelphia, Austin, and Chicago. Travelers frequently shared videos online depicting the lengthy queues at major city airports.

At Austin-Bergstrom International Airport in Texas, one traveler posted a video on TikTok at 2 a.m. showcasing a winding security queue and advised others to arrive several hours in advance of their flights. The poster indicated that despite arriving four hours early, they still missed a 2:30 a.m. flight. Later reports from Austin's airport, disseminated via social media posts on X, confirmed "very long" lines in the early morning hours on Sunday, which subsequently subsided.

Similarly, a video posted Sunday morning from Chicago's O'Hare International Airport showed a security line looping back on itself at least three times. The individual who shared the video estimated a two-hour wait to clear security.

TSA publicly acknowledged the widespread long wait times in a social media post on Saturday. The agency used the platform to urge Democratic lawmakers to resolve the partial government shutdown.
