U.S. Air Travel Snarled by Winter Storms Amid Government Shutdown Pressures

Air travelers nationwide encountered significant disruptions on Tuesday as severe winter weather across the eastern U.S. converged with ongoing staffing challenges at airport security checkpoints, stemming from a partial government shutdown.

ATLANTA — Hundreds of flights faced cancellation or delay across the United States on Tuesday, just one day after powerful storm systems swept through the eastern half of the country, upending air travel in numerous cities. These disruptions arrived at an already challenging period for air travel, compounded by a partial government shutdown that began on February 14, straining staffing levels at some security checkpoints. Airports also experience heavy crowds due to spring break travelers and fans attending the annual NCAA men’s and women’s college basketball tournaments, known as March Madness.

Weather and Capacity Strain Air System

As of early Tuesday, flight-tracking site FlightAware reported over 750 flights scheduled to fly into, out of, or within the U.S. had been called off, with approximately 1,300 more experiencing delays. The storm system, which delivered heavy snow across the Midwest, raced toward the East Coast on Monday, bringing high winds that reached gusts near 50 mph (80 km) in parts of New York, according to the National Weather Service. This severe weather contributed to a pile-up of delays and cancellations at some of the nation's largest airports, including major hubs in New York, Chicago, and Atlanta.

On Monday alone, nationwide cancellations included roughly 600 flights at Chicago O’Hare International, more than 470 at Atlanta’s Hartsfield-Jackson International, and over 450 at LaGuardia Airport in New York City, FlightAware data showed. Citing severe weather conditions, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) issued ground stops for Hartsfield-Jackson and Charlotte Douglas International Airport, and implemented ground delays at JFK International and Newark Liberty International Airport.

Passengers Face Unexpected Ordeals

The widespread disruptions left many travelers stranded and frustrated. Kelly Price, attempting to return home to Colorado after a family vacation in Orlando, Florida, learned her Sunday night flight was canceled only on Monday morning. "By that time, the only place for us to sleep was the airport floor. So we’re all tired and frustrated," she stated, noting that she and her family could not book another flight until Tuesday afternoon.

Danielle Cash also found herself stranded in St. Louis on Sunday while trying to reach Tampa, Florida, following a weekend trip to Las Vegas. Unprepared for the winter conditions, Cash incurred several hundred dollars in unexpected hotel expenses in the snowy city. "It was 80 degrees in Tampa when I left and then going to Vegas," she recounted. "And it was 90 degrees in the desert." Cash eventually secured a flight that would take her to Tennessee before her final return to Tampa by Tuesday afternoon.

Shutdown's Lingering Impact on Security

These storm-related challenges unfolded as airport security screeners, employees of the Transportation Security Administration (TSA), missed their first full paycheck over the weekend. The current partial government shutdown specifically affects the Department of Homeland Security, which oversees the TSA.

Democrats in Congress have linked Homeland Security funding to new restrictions on federal immigration operations, following the fatal shootings of Alex Pretti and Renee Good in Minneapolis earlier this year. This marks the third government shutdown in less than a year that has left TSA workers temporarily without pay, though employees will receive back pay once the government reopens.

Some airports have reported longer security lines as a direct consequence of staffing shortages. More TSA workers have taken on second jobs, struggled to afford gas for their commutes, or departed the profession entirely. The Department of Homeland Security stated that over 300 TSA agents have quit since the shutdown began. Union leaders for TSA workers in Atlanta held a news conference on Monday outside Hartsfield-Jackson, warning that air travelers could face increasingly long wait times if the shutdown persists. Despite mounting financial strain, many officers continue to report for duty, with TSA union leaders stating that many officers are coping with eviction notices, vehicle repossessions, empty refrigerators, and overdrawn bank accounts.
